Special  Events

Many special events are held throughout the year, including prayer services, visits from Santa and the Easter Bunny, Christmas gift room, special enrichment programs, field trips, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of nationally recognized competitions.  These events are designed to enhance and reinforce the learning which takes place daily in the classrooms, and to foster social awareness with our families.

Geography Bee (Grades 4-6)

The National Geography Bee is a local, state and national competition in geography skills. This geography contest is designed to spark student interest in geography.  This contest is usually held in December and is organized by Mrs. Garrett and Mrs. Noyes.

Math-A-Thon (Grades K-6)

Math-A-Thon is an exciting supplemental math program that helps students improve their math skills in a fun way while raising funds for research at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world. It is non-sectarian and available to stricken children admitted by physician referral and whose diseases are under study. Math-A-Thon allows each Math Master to give less fortunate children a chance to add a healthy tomorrow.  Mrs. Mail helps to coordinate this.

Olympic Day (Grades K-6)

A day is set aside in June for our annual Olympic Day. This is a fun-filled half day of school held at the Muldoon Fitness Center at Rivier College. Our children in Grades K-6 participate in a number of fun activities with emphasis on team participation and team spirit. The Parent Group provides the students with a pizza lunch and a cool treat for dessert. Volunteers are always needed for this event!  The parent group works closely with Mrs. Cusack to organize this.

Roller Kingdom (Grades K-6)

Twice each year, the Parent Group sponsors an evening of fun at Roller Kingdom in Tyngsboro, MA. The rink is opened on this evening from 6-8pm to our IJS families only!

Spirit Days (Entire school)

Various "school spirit" days are held throughout the year.  Students are encouraged to dress according to the theme of the day.  Examples are:  Down on Farm Day, Sports Day, and Black and Orange Day.

Science Fair / Young Inventors (Grades 2-6)

Infant Jesus School hosts an annual science event, alternating each year between two formats.  One format is Young Inventors, a nation-wide event where students compete by grade level, demonstrating their creativity through an invention of their own making.  The primary emphasis is to solve a real-world problem.  Judging is based on creativity, usefulness, marketability, and research.  Local winners can move on to the state, regional, and national levels.

The other format is a traditional science fair  This is an exciting event that encourages students to think like young scientists an question the world around them in new and creative ways.  In preparation for the fair, each child designs a science project that uses the scientific method to solve a problem. The educational benefits are numerous, as students develop skills in writing, oral presentation creative thinking, and problem solving.  If you would like to be a judge, please contact one of the organizers:  Mrs. Dalton, Mrs. Toohey, or Miss Lavoie.

Spaghetti Social (Grades K-6)

Our annual Spaghetti Social is held each March. This is an opportunity for parents and children to come together and enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner with other IJS families.  Entering kindergarten families are welcome to join us for this event.  This event is sponsored by the Parent Group.

Spelling Bee (Grades 4-6)

The Spelling Bee is an annual education event sponsored by the Scripps Howard newspapers and other leading newspapers throughout the United States, Europe, Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is designed to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.  Mrs. Dumont and Mrs. Garrett coordinate this in January.
