News from 1A,
Our year is off to a
great start with such an eager group of first graders. I am so thrilled
to see everyone always doing their best.
We have enjoyed
learning about how we can look different in many ways, but are still all
people created by God and doing What Jesus Would Do. To reinforce this
concept, on the first day of school, each child came in with a stencil
of a person that they decorated to look just like them. They are
proudly displayed on a classroom wall to show their creativity. We had
fun singing a song along with the creations by describing the children
in the picture and having them guess who it was! We are also in the
process of making individual books all about themselves. When
completed, we will play a game in which I will read one of their books
and they will have to guess who it is.
Phonics
has been a review of our consonants sounds at the beginning of words.
Along with this, in penmanship, we are learning how to write those
letters correctly; especially using lower case letters. We had fun when
working on the sound of F, by using recycled scrap paper to create
frogs. Wow, there are some very unique and interesting frogs in the
classroom. Since this also incorporated learning about habitats in
Science, then they had to glue their frogs onto another sheet
putting it in its habitat. We attached some sentences they wrote
telling the habitat of their frog, as well as something they learned
about frogs that they never knew. Do you believe there was one frog
that lived in a frog hotel? Pretty cool, huh? Now, they are proudly
hanging up in our classroom.
English
has led us to talking about naming parts of sentences. This is a new
concept for most, but will help everyone improve their knowledge of
writing complete sentences. I have already seen an improvement.
In Math we are
talking about counting more than 10 objects. Learning about groups of
tens and ones, helps us understand those 2 digit numbers. The children
are finding it is so much easier to just find a group of ten objects and
recording the 1, and then just count the extra ones to record the second
number. Therefore, 18 becomes 1 group of tens and 8 ones. They are
super good at this!
In Religion,
we have been talking about God and how we say prayers to talk to Him.
We even had a prayer celebration thanking God for his many gifts he has
given us. We are discovering the Bible is the word of God, filled with
wonderful stories that we do love listening to.
Our Country Fair is
scheduled for Saturday, September 27th. We are getting ready
for it by doing many cool activities in class. Recently we made
necklaces that say, “Shine for Jesus.” Make sure you see the attached
picture of all the children wearing them! It was fun!
