The latest news from Mrs. Rockwell's second grade class

101 Dalmatians Lane

Adventureland, NH 03060

October 2008

        This month in 2R:

  • In religion, we are learning about saints and heroes.

  • Reading brings a new Book Report and Project.  This month the project is Make a Book.  This Make a Book will be due on Thurs., October 30th.

  • Our first Second Grade Spelling Bee will be this month covering Units 1 to 5.  Students from both 2A and 2R will compete for the title of Spelling Bee Champion.

  • In math, we continue to work on math facts and decision making.  We are also doing Rockets, a 60 Second Test, and Around the World to improve our math facts.  Students really benefit from using flashcards at home.

  • We are making our classroom community now that we finished studying them.  The students are working hard in cooperative groups to make their neighborhoods which we will join together to make a city.

  • In science we will learn about natural resources, land, and dinosaurs.  Students are invited to bring in their dinosaurs to show the class.

  • English with Miss Powell has been a review of complete sentences. We will now start writing Halloween stories.

Our class will also be doing Book It from Pizza Hut from October to March.  The goal for second grade is 125 pages or 4 books per month.  When the student brings in their signed form with a total of at least 125 pages or 4 books, they will receive a certificate for a Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.  Please help your child achieve this goal by spending a little time everyday reading with them.  Your child can read alone, you and your child can take turns reading, or your child can read to you, but most of all it should be an enjoyable time for both of you.

Our class will be having a Halloween Party on Friday, Oct. 31st.  Our classroom mom, Mrs. Miseirvitch, will be contacting you for goodies.  Students should wear black and orange clothes that day.

The second grade will be collecting paper towels, tissues, and gently used toys for the Corpus Christi food kitchen as part of our service project.

It will be a very busy month with all kinds of things to learn and do.  It should be fun!
