News from Mrs. Dalton's third grade
class

November/December 2008
This school year has
been bouncing right along. We’ve been learning lots of new material and
we’ve even had the opportunity to explore a new place. With the
assistance of one of our parents, Attorney Andrew Piela, our class was
invited to visit the Hillsborough County Superior Court, so they could
better understand how our judicial system works. We had a tigger-ri-fic
time. Now that we’re back, we’ll be continuing our learning in the
following areas:
Religion
We are starting a new
unit that teaches our students how to love, forgive, and heal as Jesus
Christ does. We will read about the Great Commandment and the Holy
Spirit, and how they help us make good choices.
Math
We have now begun our
review of subtracting whole numbers. We also will be learning how to
use mental math to subtract, how to estimate differences, and how to use
a variety of strategies to solve word problems.
Social Studies
We are continuing our
study of communities and how they relate to other communities in the
world. We also will become skilled at reading a map and a time line.
Reading
Our basal reader is
providing us with lots of interesting stories from a variety of genres.
We also are developing our reading vocabulary and practicing many
valuable reading skills.
English
We have nearly
completed our unit on nouns and are ready to begin learning about verbs.
In addition, we will
study how to use the proper verb tense when we are writing as well as
how to combine verbs to make our writing clearer.
Science
We have been
examining the changes that occur in matter. Students will be able to
tell the difference between a physical change and a chemical change.
They also will discover how to create a mixture or a solution.
As you can see, we
have lots of new material to cover. This should keep all my third
graders very busy this quarter.
I hope all of your
holidays are blessed and that you enjoy the rest of 2008. I’ll be
writing more in the New Year!
