October 2008

I hope everyone is enjoying this great weather.  Fall is finally here.  Don’t forget to vote for our scarecrow in front of Dr. Todd and Dr. Chamberlain’s office.  You can vote once a day for the entire month of October.

 Field Trips

We had a great time at Ruggles Mine.  The kids really enjoyed hammering away at the rocks, collecting and identifying rocks, and walking through dark caves.  Check out our pictures on the website.

We will also go to Ripano’s Stoneworks.  The company installs countertops.  We will get to see the different types of rock they use like granite and marble.  We can see how they cut the slabs too.

Reading:

We are finishing The Wish Giver.  The students had to choose one of three projects to complete.  I can’t wait to see them!  This book also contains elements of magic.  Therefore, the students will be given a card trick that they will have to try to perform for the class.  Let the magic begin!

Our next book will be On My Honor

Math:

We will continue adding and subtracting larger numbers.  We will also be reviewing money and time.  After snack both classes will play Capture the Flag, which is a multiplication competition, starting mid-October.

Science:

We are still studying rocks and minerals.  The class is enjoying our field trips and experiments.  We made sedimentary rocks and metamorphic pancakes.

Look at more class pictures in our Photo Gallery.

Social Studies:

We just finished our section on map and globe skills.  Now, we are learning about the different regions of the United States.

Religion:

We are learning about the Ten Commandments, Baptism, some Saints, and the meaning of certain prayers.  October is the month of the Rosary.

English:

Our new unit is on verbs.  In writer’s workshop we are writing Halloween stories and creating Haiku poems about the fall.

Halloween:

October 31st is Halloween.  The students can wear black and orange on this day.  We will have a Halloween party too.  Happy Haunting!
