News from Mrs. Early's fifth grade class

November 2008

With the arrival of November comes the time for report cards and parent-teacher conferences.  I look forward to seeing you at our conference on November 25th or 26th.

During the month of November the fifth graders are the Infant Jesus School Penny Pickers. They visit all the classrooms daily, collecting money for the Nashua Pastoral Care Center.   Please help out this worthwhile cause by sending in your pennies and spare change.

We are just starting to study about Baptism and Confirmation.  When people receive these sacraments, the Holy Spirit infuses them with the gift of grace.  The children will come to realize that this special gift from God provides us with the strength and support we need to live our lives as Jesus taught us.

My reading group just started reading Bound for Oregon by Jean Van Leeuwen.  The story is based on the reminiscences of a woman who traveled on the Oregon Trail as a child.

In English we are about to finish our unit on nouns.  The children have become more proficient in recognizing how nouns are used in sentences.

Working with both whole numbers and decimals has been our focus in math.  We recently finished the chapter on multiplication, and we are beginning division.  Our accuracy in division depends on accuracy with both multiplication and subtraction facts.  Please continue to review them with your child.

Our focus in social studies is the earliest Americans.  The children will be learning about how the first Americans used natural resources to meet their needs, and how geography influenced where ancient Indians settled and how they lived. In the latter part of the month the students will be divided into groups, each group focusing on one Native American cultural group.  They will create posters and a model to show what they have learned and get organized to present their information to their classmates after Thanksgiving break.
