News from Reading Enrichment

Fall 2008
Welcome back to
school! I look forward to a fun, creative, and challenging year ahead
in our reading enrichment program.
At the Parent Open House on Sept. 9th, I will be available to parents if
they have any questions pertaining to the enrichment program, especially
those new 2nd grade parents and those new to the program. There will
also be a sign up sheet for Nov. Parent/Teacher conferences.
Second Grade
The second grade children will begin their year with me by reading the
book The Postcard Pest, by Patricia Giff. It is a delightful
story about a little girl and her classmates who send postcards to new
pen pals. We will learn all about letter writing, make our own
postcards, and even create some new designs for stamps. In our travels,
we will find out about the history of the postal service and the
interesting ways people used to send messages.
Third
Grade
The third graders will jump into a terrific fantasy story called The
BFG, by Roald Dahl. This book has been voted number one over the
years, even by some of the sixth graders! It is filled with the
adventures of a young girl and her giant friend, who speaks English, but
with a different twist! It will make your belly jiggle with giggles!
We have some exciting projects to create while reading this story. Some
of them will be done in groups, like our theme park, and others will be
done individually. Get ready for a fun September.
Fourth
Grade
Mrs.
Frisby and the Rats of NIMH,
by Robert O'Brien, will scurry into the lives of the fourth graders.
This is a fantasy story where we meet a family of mice who are trying to
stay alive and away from the dangerous human beings! The main project
will consist of a mouse magazine, complete with letters to the editor,
recipes, poems, games, etc. All the children have loved this project,
and it becomes a wonderful souvenir from their fourth grade year.

Fifth
Grade
The fifth graders will blaze a path along the Oregon Trail in their
study and reading of On to Oregon, by Honore Morrow. This
historical fiction begins in Independence, Missouri as we travel along
with the Sager family through the good times and the bad. The students
will become experts, learning about the different landforms, landmarks,
and animals the Sagers and all the other pioneers find along the way.
They will also develop a true appreciation for the hardships and
challenges these folks encountered.
Sixth
Grade
Sixth graders will venture into the past, during the colonial days, to
read the story, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth Speare.
This historical fiction book helps us become eyewitnesses to the
superstitious attitudes and thinking of the members of the Connecticut
colony. The students will learn what school and life in general was
like back then and create several group/individual projects.
I look forward to seeing a lot of you at Open House on Sept. 9th. Until
then, enjoy the beginning school days with your children,
Mrs. Hebert
