In religion we have begun Unit 2:. First graders will learn:

  • Jesus had many followers.

  • Jesus died and rose to new life

  • Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit helps us grow.

While we continue to work on our addition facts, we have begun our unit on subtraction unit in math

In phonics, we continue to work with our short vowels and create CVC words. We have also been working with digraphs - sh,ch,th,wh and glued sounds - all,an,am,ing.

In English we continue to develop strong sentences with a subject & predicate. Currently we are learning about nouns. In writing, we are developing an understanding of story writing, creating lists and brainstorming. We created a class story about a time we had in Mass. The children are working on their own small narrative book.

In reading we continue to work in guided reading grouping focusing on skills to strengthen their reading. Each child is working to set a goal in reading focusing on accuracy, rate or expression. Each week first graders practice new comprehension strategies such as identifying facts and details from a story as well as recognizing the "big idea" of a story.

In social studies, we are learning about what a community is and current events from our weekly reading of Time for Kids.

In science are currently learning about living and nonliving things. We are also examining habitats.
